Viola Davis has shared a fierce first look from The Woman King, the upcoming film based on the real-life story of the Dahomey Amazons.

In the Gina Prince Bythewood-directed film, Davis will play Nanisca, the general of the all-female military unit in the Kingdom of Dahomey.

Davis is producing the project alongside Cathy Schulman, Julius Tennon, and Maria Bello. The story is based on an original screenplay by Dana Stevens.

Per a recent description of the film, “the project is inspired by true events that took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The story follows Nanisca (Davis), the general of the all-female military unit, and Nawi (Mbedu), an ambitious recruit, who together fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.”

The film features women more creatives behind the camera as well, including Polly Morgan (A Quiet Place 2) serving as the film’s cinematographer.

Viola Davis shared the first looks of the film on Instagram and Twitter. She wrote, “I’m deeply honored and excited to bring this incredible story of these badass female warriors to life. Get ready for THE WOMAN KING, exclusively in movie theaters this Fall!!”
